Tongues

James 3:1-12

The tongue is a reflection of the heart.

Are you a spring of living water. A refreshing characteristic.

The book of James is really a mirror.

Don’t let your fresh water spring get contaminated by salt. Be weary of what you read, listen and watch. Also family situation and colleagues.

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

Compassion hymn

How deep our father’s love

Deep deep love of Jesus

Our relationship with Jesus are not intellectual but personal.

Jesus resisted temptation to the point of shedding blood.

Turn to Jesus in the hour of need.

We should be like a little child clinging to their parents. Draw near to Christ with confidence.

Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

You will never learn if God tells you directly. He is leading you through it for a reason.

Even though God doesn’t give us the answer, we can still find joy.

If God dpes something good in your life, what you change it? Then it would no longer be perfect. -James motgromery

Works

James 2:14-26

Works are the results of our faith.

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

1 Timothy 6

Godliness with contemptment is great gain.

Paul warns Timothy of false teachings.

We cannot bring anything with us when we die.

Doer

James 2:1-13

Partiality is breaking the royal laws of God.

Love God and your neighbours as yourself.

Why do we discriminate? We all have an internal value system. Yet we all stand before God with nothing.

To be a doer of the word of God.

job 34

“Therefore, hear me, you men of understanding: far be it from God that he should do wickedness, and from the Almighty that he should do wrong.
Job 34:10 ESV
https://bible.com/bible/59/job.34.10.ESV

God is righteous. Hold onto it when you are suffering.

God be glorified when you’re in pain. Try hard to remember this when suffering.

Vv13 God is the definition of authority. Creator of all life

Vv14 sustainer of all life.

We like to receive grace but not suffering. All God does is righteousness.

For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?
1 Corinthians 4:7 ESV
https://bible.com/bible/59/1co.4.7.ESV

God is impartial. God is righteous. God is omnicient.

When he is quiet, who can condemn? When he hides his face, who can behold him, whether it be a nation or a man?— that a godless man should not reign, that he should not ensnare the people.
Job 34:29‭-‬30 ESV

When God is silent He is putting you through an exam.

But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?” Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use?

Steadfastness

James 1:1-11

Maturity, the over arching theme for the entire book.

Impatience and inconsistencies in your life. Control of the tongue. Materialism.

Characteristics of living faith. The way you live reflects your understanding of faith.

Trials – something unwelcome.

Vv2 it is implying you responded incorrectly. Take a step back from your emotional response. Consider it. Under trial the worst of man comes out.

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33 ESV
https://bible.com/bible/59/jhn.16.33.ESV

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.
1 Peter 4:12 ESV
https://bible.com/bible/59/1pe.4.12.ESV

Steadfastness – unwavering in your trust in God.

Trial and temptation stem from the same Greek word.

The correct response

Psa 86:1-5 look to God. Remember who He is and that He is good. Cling to His promises.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?
Romans 8:35 ESV
https://bible.com/bible/59/rom.8

Wrong response

Fatalism.

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV

#job 33

Elihu wants to help Job with his delima of innocent suffering.

Vv12 Job is self righteous. He forgot that God is greater than man.

God speaks through pain. Vv19

God also speaks to us through messengers / mediators.

Gave Himself for me

Gal 2:11 – 21

What’s in it for God and not me.

  1. A Christian life is a death.
  2. A Christian life is a life. We live a life for God.

  3. The Christian life is a believing and thankful life.

  4. Jesus gave His life for me. He gave Himself for me .

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Galatians 2:20 ESV

Are you still listening to your old manager (Satan)?

Romans 8:1-5

Job 32

Vv3 his friends could not help him. Why?

Listening to God makes you wise.

Elihu is actually a good man that speaks wisdom on behalf of God? Most likely.

Elihu believes he has a solution to Job’s problems.

Vv 21 You can’t solve a problem unless you define it. Elihu has done this.

If you are not willing to fight your flesh you will succeed in nothing.

Rom1 we are indebted to our neighbors. We are holding the gospel.

God uses an evil nation – Habakkuk

What would it be like for contemporaries to look at my life?

In these two books we see the disobedience of Judah and Israel. We as Christians parallel this.

Paradoxes are not conflicts.

Agape love

How to demo ? Gal 5:22 die to our sinful self and submit to the Holy Spirit.

We are commanded to demo agape love to God and others.
