Courage in crisis – Esther 4

The crisis

How do you respond to a crisis?
Do you stop and pray?
Psa 57:2, David hiding in a cave.
It was about to be open season on the Jews.
Mordecai’s indiscretion – he felt responsible. Imagine the weight!

Great doors swing on small hinges.
God uses insignificant people to accomplish His will – Hathach the eunuch.
Esther it is time for the king to know your origin.
v14 – Mordecai acknowledging God’s providence.
v16 – If I perish, I perish! Similar to:
Dan 3:16
Acts 20:24, 21:13
Esther a type of Christ?

Mordecai’s intercession

Ezra 8 – No royal escort

Fasting and prayer

Neh 1:4
Dan 9:3
Mat 17
Crisis leads to communion
Fasting and prayer, is this your knee jerk reaction?

Thanks man for driving me closer to God! – Ken Ramey

Esther 3

Let us see God’s providence.

Context: Greeks defeated Persians.

He carried away all Jerusalem and all the officials and all the mighty men of valor, 10,000 captives, and all the craftsmen and the smiths. None remained, except the poorest people of the land. (2 Kings 24:14)

God creates our personalities.
Rest and rejoice in God’s providence.
1 Pet 3 – Gentle and quiet spirit.
God uses us even though you are unfaithful.

  1. Esther becomes queen
  2. Mordecai save the king’s life

“When you are tempted to doubt God’s hand, trust God’s heart.

Settling an old score

Antisematism = Haman
Fits Haman perfectly:
There are six things that the Lord hates,
seven that are an abomination to him:
haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
and hands that shed innocent blood,
a heart that devises wicked plans,
feet that make haste to run to evil,
a false witness who breathes out lies,
and one who sows discord among brothers
(Pro 6:16-19)

Haman’s unfair promotion

Life isn’t always fair.
God never forsakes the righteous or forgets their deeds.
Haman the Agagite.
Descendant of Agag (king of Amalakites)

Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim. (Exo 17:8)

“Remember what Amalek did to you on the way as you came out of Egypt, how he attacked you on the way when you were faint and weary, and cut off your tail, those who were lagging behind you, and he did not fear God. Therefore when the Lord your God has given you rest from all your enemies around you, in the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance to possess, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven; you shall not forget (Deu 25:17-19)

1 Sam 15, Saul was suppose to wipe out the Amalakites.
1 Sam 30:16
Saul (Benjamite)
Mordecai (Benjamite)
Talk about bad blood (~ 500 years)

Haman’s plot

The lot is cast into the lap,
but its every decision is from the Lord.
(Pro 16:33)
Est 3:15 we see Haman’s lack of pity/mercy.
The expression – Nero fiddled while Rome burned
Xerxes father was Cyrus.
Persians were also confused (city of Susa).

How’s it going? Better than I deserve! – Ken Ramey

The emperor with no clothes – Esther 2

By Ken Ramey

The Israelites that remained in Persia.
Practical aethiest – we say there is a God, but we act like there isn’t.

Resting in God’s providence
– Trust in God
– Rejoice in Him
– Praise Him
– take Job for example

The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”
They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds,
there is none who does good (Psa 14:1)

We see the world’s weight in Est 1:1-3
Ahasuerus (Persian name) = Xerxes

Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty,
and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city. (Pro 16:32)

The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord;
he turns it wherever he will. (Pro 21:1)

This is what Esther was up against. Much like us.
